SunnyDay Is Wonderful & Contentment Brings Lasting Happiness

Two historical group photographs of SunnyDay performances and joyful gatherings

SunnyDay Is Wonderful

I have been coming to SunnyDay for two years and have found it a wonderful place. It offers older adults singing, dancing, calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, mahjong, Chinese chess, blood-pressure checks, medical consultations, physical therapy and other health-promoting programs, as well as English and computer lessons. My left thumb was very painful from inflammation of the tendon sheath, and I could not straighten it. After several sessions of rehabilitation therapy, it has now largely healed, relieving my pain. Therefore, for both my physical well-being and spiritual sustenance, I very much enjoy coming to SunnyDay. I also practice calligraphy for fitness and attend the calligraphy class. I offer this poem in praise of SunnyDay:

SunnyDay is wonderful for activities in later life;
Its peaceful, elegant haven is well suited to older adults.
Nurture body and mind through plentiful exercise;
Come often for wellness, and youth returns.

Contentment Brings Lasting Happiness

Human beings begin life without illness, yet many ailments are of our own making.
Think of the suffering of illness: freedom from illness is a blessing.
Think of the suffering of hunger and cold: food and warmth are blessings.
Think of the hardships of life: an open, optimistic outlook is a blessing.
Think of the suffering caused by a world in turmoil: peace is a blessing.
Think of the suffering of imprisonment: living honorably within one’s place is a blessing.

Do not envy the good life of another; still others have less than you.
Do not lament your own meager fortune; still others face a harsher fate.
Wrongdoing brings the pain of guilt, while excessive worry invites illness.
Good deeds and accumulated virtue bring abundant blessings; Heaven naturally helps the good.

Throughout a person’s life, freedom from illness and disaster should inspire contentment.
Much distress comes from thoughts we cannot release; much sorrow comes from what we cannot see beyond.
We may be meant for long life, yet shorten it by our own actions.
I urge everyone in this world: be content, and happiness will remain.
And if you come to SunnyDay, your later years will be happier still.
