Memories of My Life at SunnyDay Adult Day Health Care

I have lived in the United States for more than ten years. I often heard older Chinese people say, ‘After coming to America to join our families, we do not understand the language, do not recognize the roads when driving, and are afraid of getting lost on the bus. Life therefore often feels dull and lonely.’ I felt the same. A friend introduced me to SunnyDay Adult Day Health Care, where I first became accustomed to the surroundings and then developed new interests. SunnyDay is fully equipped and offers painting, calligraphy, English, singing, dancing, gardening, photography, mahjong, Go, Chinese chess, Chinese opera, exercise, rehabilitation, medical care and nursing. SunnyDay also established its Elderly Community College, where older adults could freely choose courses and put lifelong learning into practice. More than seventy students completed the first class; the oldest was ninety-six.

SunnyDay members include Chinese people from Southeast Asia as well as people of other backgrounds. They take part in activities according to their needs, interests and strengths. Nurses stay busy checking blood pressure, blood sugar and weight and giving injections or medicines. Younger healthcare staff assist with rehabilitation and heat therapy. Every employee works to arrange what is needed so older adults feel happy and welcome. SunnyDay is a warm, caring family that draws people to it.

Many of SunnyDay’s older adults made contributions to society throughout their lives. Now retired in America, they can enjoy their later years in freedom and peace and appreciate the glow of life’s evening. With gratitude for the care provided in this country, members at SunnyDay discuss the past and present, recite poetry, paint, sing aloud, dance, study English and calligraphy, play mahjong and chess, and use computers. They help and learn from one another, show mutual respect, and enjoy one another’s company. These activities improve physical and emotional health and make good use of time.

We also go on frequent outings. In the bright outdoor sunshine, we experience nature, breathe fresh air, stretch our bodies and feel refreshed. We visit scenic places: watching peacocks spread their magnificent feathers at the peacock garden; seeing rare lotus flowers and seedpods at Echo Park; admiring the Crystal Cathedral’s grand architecture, worshipping and offering prayers; and viewing historic European art at the Getty Museum, where beautiful plants, green lawns, bridges and flowing water broaden our horizons. Time is limited, so each visit only gives us a glimpse. On every outing, everyone shares a meal or picnic and returns home happy.

Our members have silver hair and youthful faces. They meet life with a smile, live simply, keep generous hearts and get along peacefully with others. May everyone remain optimistic, enjoy the blessing of peace in every season, preserve a joyful heart and live a long and happy later life.
